Blackjack Strategy

When playing blackjack live or online, there are two strategies to employ; a sound, follow the rules strategy and card counting.

Card counting is an intricate technique highlighted in the movie 21. It involves a system of determining the values of cards based on what has been dealt.

But with multi-card shufflers, this does not always work.

So the most reliable strategy is to follow a simple format of when to play certain cards in certain situations.

There are many tables available. This is a version that works for basic blackjack strategy. If you stick to this, you lessen the house’s edge and give yourself a chance.

Remember, there are both soft hands and hard hands. A Soft hand contains an ace; a hard hand does not.

Also remember that you see only one of the dealer’s hole cards.

Here’s how it works:
A2, A3 – Hit, unless the dealer has four through six, in which case double.
A4, A4 – Hit, unless the dealer has four through six, in which case double.
A6 – Hit, unless the dealer has three through six, in which case double.
A7 – Hit, unless the dealer has 7 or 8, in which case stand. Double on three through six.
A8, A9 – Stand.
A-10 is 21 so obviously you stand.

This is the chart for hard hands, where your two starting cards do no contain an ace.
3-8 – Hit.
9 – Hit, unless the dealer has three through six, in which case double.
10 – Hit, unless the dealer has two through nine, in which case double.
11 – Hit unless dealer has two through 10, in which case double.
12 – Hit, unless the dealer has four through six, in which case stand.
13-16 – Hit, unless the dealer has two through six, in which case stand.
17-21 – Stand.

Knowing when to split a hand with pairs is critical too. Here is that chart:
A-A: Split.
10-10: Stand.
9-9: Stand if the dealer has 7, 10 or Ace. Split 2-6, 8-9.
8-8: Split.
7-7: Hit. Split if the dealer has two through seven.
6-6: Hit. Split if the dealer has two through six.
5-5: Hit. Double if the dealer has two through nine.
4-4: Hit. Split if the dealer has 5 or 6.
3-3: Hit. Split if the dealer has 2 or 7.
2-2: Hit. Split if the dealer has 2 or 7.

By following the rules of this basic chart, you will make sound plays. You can find numerical versions of this chart one the Internet. You can print them and take them with you.

By following these simple instructions to the letter you increase your opportunities to win and take much of the guesswork out of the game. Solis players employ this strategy along with card counting and can turn the game in their favor. Unlike other casino games, blackjack involves an amount of skill and that helps give players who employ a sound strategy the edge.

Also make sure you know the rules of each type of individual form of blackjack. The rules can have subtle differences in each. For example, Atlantic City Blackjack and Vegas Strip blackjack have slightly different rules from Classic Blackjack. This can impact your approach. Know the subtle differences, employ the tactics above and you have a better chance of being a successful player longterm. Also, spend some time learning the basics of card counting and your chance to win will increase as well.
