Seven card stud, also played as stud high/low is one of the most demanding forms of poker, just as
Caribbean Stud
poker
is fun to play and can provide players with challenging features like good memory, intuition, and great strategies in order to win. The high low structure of the game means that the pot will be split amongst the players with the highest hand and the lowest qualifying hand. For a hand to qualify it must be a card with a number 8 or lower in any poker format.
The ace cards could be high or low cards depending on where it is needed most and the outcome will not be affected by the types of hands, so a low hand can still be a flush or full house, it must just be an 8 or lower combination. These are the only rules that are different from normal seven card stud. You will see that stud high/low is usually played as a low limits game, but you can choose high limits if you like.
Stud high/low can get quite intense very soon in to the game regarding the betting and raising which makes this type of poker perfect for more aggressive players. The game has different streets and the players will have to be able to memorize what is in each one so that they can come up with the highest hand of poker. You must ask yourself how each of the streets can help you can how they will in turn help the other players. Trips (three of a kind) will be the best hand to have to start in seven card stud.
A three of a kind would end most of your opponents games, so you must not show it, bet an average amounts so that the pot can increase by the 5th street. Stud high/low uses insight to help players to win, so you must become skilled at reading your opponents. You can look at their body language, the way that they play, and you will soon be able to tell if they are bluffing or if they have a better hand than you.
When you look at the type of game that they play you can find out a few things. There are some main types of styles to look out for and analyze are loose passive, tight aggressive, a loose aggressive, or tight passive. You must learn what each of these types does in their game and how you can manipulate the pot and game according to how they play. In stud high/low the common names that are used for these players are the bull, which is aggressive and the bear who is a conservative and tight player.
Part of reading your opponent will be looking at how they bet, how much the bet, when and how often. This can give away valuable details about if they are bluffing, or if they have good hands. You will notice that an inexperienced player in stud high/low will bet a high amount when they have a good hand, but this can sometimes be too high and give away that they can win, so the players will fold too soon before there is enough money in the pot.
